Tell us a little bit about your family.
We were overjoyed to welcome Calliope into our Hyde Park home in September. She joins her daddy, Avi, who is a web developer at the University of Chicago; her mommy, Laura, who is taking a break from her career in social work to stay home with her; their housemate Kelsey, who also works for the university; and her 9 year old Puerto Rican rescue puppy Miel.
Tell us about the little one in the Green Diaper Babies cloth diapers.
Calliope is 5 months old and definitely has a spirited redhead personality. She spends her days posing for her adoring Facebook fans, watching the kids in the park next door, learning nursery rhymes, dancing to her favorite 90s hits on the radio, pondering why she has two hands, and when the weather permits going for long walks. She especially loves a good party as she can be seen smiling at the antics of the older kids or asleep and snuggling in everyone’s arms.
As much as she loves her cloth diapers, her favorite part of the day is when she gets a little naked time to wiggle, kick, and scoot across the table. She is also especially proud of her ability to: roll from tummy to back, sit with minimal support, and get mommy and daddy to come smile at her.
What are the main reasons you like being apart of the Green Diaper Babies family?
We like being a part of Green Diaper Babies because they take all of the work out of cloth diapering. Being redheads, we knew we wanted to use cloth diapers due to the likelihood that Calliope would have sensitive skin issues with disposable; however, the mountains of laundry seemed undesirable. When friends suggested we try Green Diaper Babies, we were excited to find out how affordable and easy they make it. Additionally, we love the attention to detail and flexibility that Shannon has provided to our family — friendly reminders, finding and returning the diaper cover that accidentally ended up in the bag, letting us put the service on hiatus for the holidays. Green Diaper Babies really seems to get how overwhelming it is to be new parents and try to make cloth diapering the easiest part of your day.
What are some of your favorite activities to do as a family?
As a family, we love to spend time together and bring others together. Calliope has already helped host: a Christmas Cookie Exchange, a New Year’s Eve dinner party, and a new mom’s group; as well as attending numerous game nights, potlucks, and neighborhood events.
We cook dinner almost every night with Calliope watching us chop and saute from her carrier (We are excited to be start solids soon as she already enjoys smells and small tastes). She especially loves how mom likes to make funny faces while chopping and how dad sneaks tastes of sauces when he thinks mom isn’t looking.
Finally, on the days when exhaustion sets in, we’ve learned that Calliope loves to spend an hour or two watching Homeland or Downton Abbey before bed; but always protests The Walking Dead.
